Photography has been a hobby on and off since my early teens...which means I have been dabbling for hmmm...well over 40 years. In that time I have owned and used a wide range of camera types including half-frame (anyone remember those?), 35mm (rangefinder and SLR) and 6x6cm (single and twin lens reflex). Initial forays into the world of digital photography were made with a tiny Kyocera followed by an excellent Nikon Coolpix 5200, which is still doing sterling service.

Current digital equipment consists mainly of:-
  • Canon EOS 5D
  • Canon EOS 20D
  • Canon EF 24-105mm f4 L IS USM
  • Canon EF 70-300mm IS USM
  • Canon EF-S 17-85mm IS USM
  • Canon EF-S 60mm Macro USM
  • Canon Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX
The EF 24-105mm f4 L IS USM is the lense that spends most time on the 5D, it is a superbly capable lense for the majority of my travel photography.  On the 5D's full-frame sensor, the focal length of 24mm is ideal for cityscapes etc whilst the 105mm end of the zoom range provides for the situations where medium telephoto is needed. The constant max aperture of f4 throughout the zoom range is also a boon.  The IS (image stabilisation) function works very well, enabling me to achieve good results hand-held at shutter speeds as low as 1/6sec.

The EF-S 60mm Macro lens is pretty much permanently attached to the 20D, waiting for those macro-moments of inspiration (you can read that two ways).

In the photo albums referred to below, the files are mostly a maximum size of 1024 x 683 pixels.  If you would like to download the original (hi-res) version, please contact me.

The album Travels contains sub-albums covering our travels in France, Germany, Spain, Hong Kong and Australia.  Click on French Scenes for a miscellany of photographs of things French.

Nature
Apart from travel photography, I also enjoy trying to capture shots of flora and fauna in venues such as Westonbirt Arboretum, Kew Gardens and National Trust properties like Hidcote Manor Garden. An ever increasing number of these photographs can be seen in the gallery
Nature
with it's sub-albums Trees and Flora  Also in this gallery is the small album of bird photographs Slimbridge taken one very cold and miserable February day, when trying to become familiar with the then new EF70-300 IS USM lens.  The new sub-albums Hoverflies , Reptiles and Insects contain examples (amongst other things) of wildlife seen in and around our caravan awning whilst on our travels.

Of course, being a non-specialist when it comes to a chosen theme or topic, I tend to photograph whatever appeals to me and that includes buildings and other man-made structures.  To view a limited selection of my efforts, please click on Buildings & Structures .

As I begin to make use of my web space, I am slowly sorting through my hard drive and uploading more files.  One result is a small eclectic selection contained in the album Images.  In the meantime, more of my photographs can be seen via my Flickr site either by clicking small Flickr link below or by clicking on one of the (randomly selected) photos below:-

Black & White
In an attempt to resurrect my black & white darkroom skills, I have started to work on a new album in my Gallery dedicated to monochrome photos.  In a previous existence I had studied the work of Ansel Adams and in particular his 'Zone System'.  In a way, digital photography gives the opportunity to try to put the theory into practice in a much more realistic way than working with rolls of 35mm film ever did.

Really Black & White!
